The Beautiful Bulgaria Programme

Beautiful Bulgaria is a Programme of the Bulgarian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy (MLSP) for temporary employment and vocational training in the area of construction and tourism. It has been implemented since 1998 following the success of the pilot Beautiful Sofia Project carried out in 1997.

The Programme is funded by the Bulgarian Government, the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the municipalities in which the Programme is active, as well as separate governments and one NGO. It is executed by MLSP with the support of UNDP.

The Beautiful Bulgaria Programme aims to alleviate unemployment, while improving the living environment of the target cities, raising the tourism attractiveness of the country while strengthening small and medium enterprises.

Since its inception in Sofia, the Beautiful Bulgaria Programme has grown step by step and is now working in 42 municipalities all over the country. 23 000 unemployed have benefited from the Programme, of which 5 750 found permanent jobs. Under the Programme, 9 000 unemployed were provided with vocational training. A total of 800 sites were refurbished, out of which 350 are monuments of culture.
